Alex Sanchez is a talented Navajo artist from the Navajo Nation, originally from Gallup, New Mexico. With more than 30 years of experience in jewelry making, Alex has dedicated much of his life to mastering the art of traditional and contemporary Navajo silversmithing.
Alex specializes in petroglyph designs on silver, stamping, repoussé, old-style techniques, and traditional silverwork. His pieces often reflect the timeless beauty and symbolism found in ancient petroglyph imagery, bringing those historic designs into modern jewelry while still honoring their cultural roots.
A major inspiration in Alex’s journey as a silversmith was his brother, Myron Panteah. Watching and learning from him helped spark Alex’s passion for jewelry making and encouraged him to pursue the craft professionally. Over the years, Alex developed his own recognizable style while continuing to respect the traditions that influenced his work.
When he’s not at his workbench creating new pieces, you can often find Alex at Thunderbird Supply in Gallup, New Mexico, where he gathers the materials he needs for his craft. The well-known supply shop is a staple in the Native jewelry-making community and serves as a regular stop for artists like Alex who rely on quality tools and materials.
Alex also participates in several shows throughout the Four Corners region. His work can often be found at major Native art markets such as the Heard Museum Show in Phoenix, Arizona, and the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) Santa Fe Indian Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico. These events give collectors and admirers the opportunity to see his work in person and connect with the artist behind the designs.
For those who can’t make it to these shows, Alex also shares his work through social media, where he posts updates about what he is currently creating and pieces that are available for purchase.
Through decades of dedication, Alex Sanchez continues to contribute to the rich tradition of Navajo silversmithing, creating jewelry that carries both artistic skill and cultural meaning.
