We’re proud to feature Justin Russell Jr., a Navajo artist from Whitewater, Colorado, whose work reflects both tradition and personal expression. Since beginning his silversmithing journey in 2016, Justin has dedicated himself to developing a style that honors classic Navajo techniques while incorporating contemporary elements.
Justin’s introduction to jewelry-making came through his family. His father, Justin Russell Sr., a self-taught silversmith from Leupp, Arizona, played a major role in shaping his path. Growing up, his father learned by watching his own mother, Mary Russell, and his brother Austin create jewelry, establishing a strong family foundation in the craft that continues through Justin today.
Over the years, Justin has expanded his skills and artistic perspective. He has attended workshops with acclaimed artist Darryl Begay, including time spent doing workshops with him Rio Rancho, NM. He also draws inspiration from influential figures in Native jewelry history, including Charles Loloma, known for his exceptional lapidary work, and historic artists like Peshlakai, whose silverwork set a high standard for design and craftsmanship.
Justin has a particular passion for working with stones, often emphasizing their beauty alongside high-quality silverwork. For him, the combination of the two is what makes the creative process especially exciting.
In addition to his work as an artist, Justin has been a longtime member of the Thunderbird Supply community, purchasing materials from both the Flagstaff store and online since 2016.
You can find and purchase Justin’s work through his social media platforms or in person at Willow Creek Herb & Tea.
